Big tech companies want your data. They want you to pay monthly fees to store your photos, documents, and files on their servers. What if you could stop paying those fees and keep your files safe at home? This Raspberry Pi cloud storage tutorial will show you how to build your own private server in under an hour. It is cheaper than you think, and you do not need to be a software engineer to do it.

What You Need for Your Home Cloud
You only need a few pieces of hardware to get started. Most of these items might already be lying around your house. If not, they are cheap to buy online.
- A Raspberry Pi board (Model 3 or 4 works best)
- A fast MicroSD card (at least 16GB)
- An external USB hard drive or a fast USB flash drive
- An ethernet cable or a stable Wi-Fi connection
- A power supply for your Raspberry Pi
The external hard drive is where all your files will live. I recommend using a drive with its own power plug. The Raspberry Pi sometimes struggles to power large external drives on its own. Using an external power source for your drive prevents crashes.
Step 1: Preparing Your Raspberry Pi
First, you need to install an operating system on your MicroSD card. Download the official Raspberry Pi Imager tool on your computer. Insert your MicroSD card into your computer and open the tool. Choose the Raspberry Pi OS Lite option. This version does not have a desktop interface, which makes it run much faster.
Before you click write, open the settings menu in the imager. Enable SSH and set a username and password. This step lets you control your Pi from your regular computer. It means you do not need to plug a monitor or keyboard into the Pi itself. Once the writing process finishes, put the card into your Pi and turn it on.
Step 2: Installing the Cloud Software
We will use a free program called Nextcloud for this project. It works just like Google Drive or Dropbox, but you own the physical drive. Open a terminal window on your main computer and log into your Pi. You can do this by typing ssh followed by your username and the IP address of your Pi.
Once you are logged in, update your system. Run the command to update your packages. Next, we will install Nextcloud using a simple tool called Snap. Type the command to install Nextcloud. The system will download and set up everything automatically. This process usually takes about five minutes.
Now, open a web browser on your computer. Type the IP address of your Raspberry Pi into the address bar. You will see the Nextcloud setup screen. Create your admin username and password here. Your basic cloud is now ready, but we still need to connect your big storage drive.
Step 3: Connecting Your Storage Drive
Plug your external hard drive into one of the blue USB ports on the Raspberry Pi. We need to tell the Pi to mount this drive automatically every time it starts up. Log back into your Pi terminal. Find the name of your drive using the disk tool command.
Format the drive to the ext4 file system. This format works best with Linux. Create a folder on your Pi where the drive will connect. Edit the system file to add your drive path. Now, point Nextcloud to this new folder so it uses the external drive instead of the small MicroSD card.
Once you finish this step, you will have terabytes of space. You can download the Nextcloud app on your phone and computer. It will sync your files automatically whenever you are on your home network.
